龙珠 Z 是龙珠系列中的第二部，根据日本著名漫画家鸟山明的同名《龙珠》漫画改编，于 1989 年 4 月 19 日在日本富士电视台首播 1996 年 1 月 31 日播放完毕。改编于漫画中第 195 篇-第 519 篇，因为这期间鸟山明的漫画风格转为超激战，而且故事也和前 194 篇风格没有太大关联，因此由东映动画公司改编成为独立的动画片。题目中的“Z”为鸟山明所取，字母表最后一个字母，意为“结束”。
故事发生于“龙珠”后五年的世界，讲述悟空和伙伴们保卫地球的故事。总共分为九个篇幅：赛亚人篇（第 1 话–第 35 话）、那美克星篇（第 36 话~第 74 话）、弗利萨篇（第 75 话~第 107 话）、魔凶星篇（第 108 话～第 117 话）、人造人篇（第 118 话～第 139 话）、沙鲁游戏篇（第 140 话～第 194 话）、那个世界的武道会篇（第 195 话～第 199 话）、赛亚超人篇（第 200 话～第 219 话）及魔人布欧篇（第 220 话～第 291 话）。其中“魔凶星篇”及“那个世界的武道会篇”是电视动画原创故事。
