"The Bad Guys 2" fits squarely within the action genre, featuring the typical elements of high-stakes heists, globe-trotting adventures, and fast-paced sequences. It includes the classic action tropes of clever plans, teamwork, and exhilarating chase scenes. What sets it apart is its unique twist on the archetype of the 'bad guys'—here, the main characters are reformed criminals striving to do good, which adds depth and humor to the narrative. Additionally, the introduction of 'The Bad Girls' as a new criminal team creates an intriguing dynamic that refreshes the standard action formula with unexpected alliances and rivalries, contributing to both comedic and thrilling moments that distinguish "The Bad Guys 2" from typical action titles.

For the most part the comedy is a lot sharper this time around. The difficulties of reintegration is an interesting story-thread for a family-friendly film, and a satisfying follow-up to the first instalment, which lightly gestured at the limits of prison to rehabilitate anyone. These are themes which will fly over the heads of its young audience, but it still stands out, even as The Bad Guys 2 finds rather simplistic answers to the questions it poses. "Respect is earned!" one character insists, in response to another correctly pointing out that some prejudices are hard to overcome.

Usually, it takes three or four films for a franchise to end up in outer space. Even the “Fast and Furious” series waited until “F9: The Fast Saga” to send Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris to the stars in a Pontiac Fiero. "The Bad Guys 2" goes there in just the first sequel. That’s how quickly it seems the filmmakers have run out of ideas.
