Prison Break

破獄

In the heart of June 1942, under the veil of darkness, Sakuma Seitaro makes a daring escape from the isolation cell of Akita Prison, hanging precariously from the skylight frame. His desperation fuels his resolve as he shatters the glass pane, liberating himself from the confines of imprisonment. This audacious act of defiance does not go unnoticed; it reaches the ears of Urata Susumu, the chief warden of Kosuge Prison in Tokyo. Known for his strict demeanor, Urata had previously overseen life sentences, yet he harbored a unique understanding of Sakuma. Acknowledging Sakuma’s past as a dangerous fugitive who previously escaped from Aomori, Urata's compassion distinguishes him from other authorities in Sakuma's life, casting him in a role of reluctant mentor.

Three months after his escape, Sakuma, driven by grievances against the brutal conditions imposed by the Akita prison authorities, ventures to Urata's home. This visit, however, stirs a complex blend of emotions. While seeking solace and understanding from the only person who had ever shown him kindness, he inadvertently puts Urata in a precarious position. During what was meant to be an informal discussion, an unexpected twist occurs when Urata, caught off-guard, decides to alert the police, leading to Sakuma's immediate re-arrest. The irony of his situation is palpable; in seeking justice and support, he finds only the cold grasp of the law that binds him.

As time passes, the story takes a new turn when Sakuma is transferred to the harsh landscape of Abashiri Prison, notorious for its severe winters and rugged conditions. At the same time, Urata, having shown a dedicated commitment to his charges, receives orders to relocate as chief warden of this harsher institution. Their lives, intertwined by a tumultuous history of escape, imprisonment, and fleeting moments of camaraderie, reflect the underlying themes of redemption, authority, and the human desire for connection even amidst turmoil. As Sakuma navigates the bleak corridors of Abashiri, the presence of Urata lingers in his mind—a reminder of the kindness lost and the complex web of choices that led him back to confinement.
