About Sylvester Stallone
Meet Sylvester Stallone, a renowned American actor and filmmaker, born on July 6, 1946, as Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone. His career took off in 1976, when he gained critical acclaim for his co-starring role in The Lords of Flatbush and achieved his greatest success as an actor and screenwriter with the Rocky series.
The Rocky films, which Stallone wrote and starred in as the underdog boxer Rocky Balboa, became a cultural phenomenon. The first film, released in 1976, earned Stallone nominations for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actor at the Academy Awards. The Rocky series has since become a beloved part of cinema history, with the first film enshrined in the National Film Registry and the Philadelphia Museum of Art's steps, where Rocky famously trained, nicknamed the "Rocky Steps." Stallone's impact on the city of Philadelphia is so significant that he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and has a statue of his Rocky character placed near the museum.
Before his success with Rocky, Stallone struggled as an actor for several years. However, in 1982, he achieved box office success outside of the Rocky series with the action film First Blood, in which he played the PTSD-plagued soldier John Rambo. Stallone's portrayal of Rambo was so iconic that he went on to play the character in four more films, released between 1982 and 2019.
From the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, Stallone became one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors, appearing in a string of successful but critically panned action films, such as Cobra, Tango and Cash, Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, and The Specialist. In the early 2000s, his popularity waned, but he made a comeback in 2006 with Rocky Balboa, the sixth installment in the Rocky series, and Rambo, the fourth film in the Rambo series, in 2008.
In the 2010s, Stallone launched The Expendables film series, in which he played the lead as the mercenary Barney Ross, and starred in the successful Escape Plan, acting in its sequels as well. In 2015, Stallone returned to the Rocky series with Creed, a spin-off focusing on Adonis "Donnie" Creed, the son of Apollo Creed, with Stallone reprising his role as the mentor Rocky Balboa. His performance in Creed earned him his first Golden Globe award and a third Oscar nomination, 40 years after his first nomination for the same role.
