Born on January 31, 1947, Banks began his career in the early 1970s after dropping out of Indiana University to join a touring company as a stage manager. His journey led him to Australia, where he continued working in theatre.
In 1974, Banks moved to Los Angeles and started appearing in small television roles. His breakthrough movie roles include two films starring Eddie Murphy: 48 Hrs. and Beverly Hills Cop. In 48 Hrs., he portrayed a friend of the lead character who meets a tragic end, while in Beverly Hills Cop, he took on the villainous role of a criminal responsible for the death of the lead character's friend.
Some of Banks' other notable film appearances include Armed and Dangerous, Freejack, Flipper, Airplane!, Gremlins, Murder Me, Murder You, and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory.
