Born on December 21, 1937, to socialite Frances Ford Seymour and actor Henry Fonda, Fonda began her acting journey on Broadway with the play 'There Was a Little Girl' in 1960, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play. She then made her screen debut in the same year with the romantic comedy 'Tall Story.'

Fonda gained prominence during the 1960s with a series of comedies, such as 'Period of Adjustment' (1962), 'Sunday in New York' (1963), 'Cat Ballou' (1965), 'Barefoot in the Park' (1967), and the iconic 'Barbarella' (1968). Her first husband was Barbarella director Roger Vadim.

Throughout her career, Fonda has been nominated for seven Academy Awards. Her first nomination was for 'They Shoot Horses, Don't They?' Her other nominations include 'Julia' (1977), 'The China Syndrome' (1979), 'On Golden Pond' (1981), and 'The Morning After' (1986).

Fonda's success continued with a string of box-office hits, including 'Fun with Dick and Jane' (1977), 'California Suite' (1978), 'The Electric Horseman' (1979), and '9 to 5' (1980). She also won a Primetime Emmy Award for her performance in the TV film 'The Dollmaker' (1984).

In 1982, Fonda ventured into the fitness world, releasing her first exercise video, 'Jane Fonda's Workout,' which became the highest-selling VHS of the 20th century. She followed this success with 21 more exercise videos, selling over 17 million copies in total.

Following her divorce from her second husband, Tom Hayden, Fonda married billionaire media mogul Ted Turner in 1991 and retired from acting. After divorcing Turner in 2001, Fonda returned to the screen with the hit 'Monster-in-Law' (2005).
