Clea Helen D'Etienne DuVall, born on September 25, 1977, in Los Angeles, California, is an accomplished American actress, writer, producer, and director. She gained early recognition with notable film roles in The Faculty (1998), She's All That, But I'm a Cheerleader, and Girl, Interrupted (all released in 1999). Throughout the 2000s, DuVall showcased her versatility in critically acclaimed films such as Identity and 21 Grams (both 2003), The Grudge (2004), Zodiac (2007), Conviction (2010), and Argo (2012). On television, she earned acclaim for her performances as Sofie in Carnivàle (2003–2005), Audrey Hanson in Heroes (2006–2007), and Wendy Peyser in American Horror Story: Asylum (2012–2013). She also portrayed Emma Borden in The Lizzie Borden Chronicles (2015), Lara Cruz in Better Call Saul (2015–2017), Marjorie in Veep (2016–2019), and Sylvia in The Handmaid's Tale (2018–2022). Transitioning into directing, DuVall made her feature directorial debut with The Intervention in 2016, a project she also wrote and co-produced, followed by directing Happiest Season in 2020. Daughter of actor Steph DuVall and named after the novel Clea by Lawrence Durrell, she studied at the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and once worked in a coffee shop before rising to prominence in Hollywood. DuVall is respected for her diverse body of work and contributions to both film and television as a multi-talented artist.
