Mission: Impossible is a classic American television series that has left a significant mark in the world of spy fiction. The show, which was created and initially produced by Bruce Geller, follows the adventures of a team of secret government agents known as the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). The IMF is a covert group that undertakes high-stakes missions that require a great deal of skill, cunning, and finesse.
In the first season of the show, the IMF is led by Dan Briggs, played by Steven Hill. However, in the remaining seasons, the team is led by Jim Phelps, portrayed by the talented Peter Graves. One of the most iconic elements of the series is the way in which the missions are assigned. Each episode begins with Briggs or Phelps receiving a recorded message that contains their instructions. The message then self-destructs, leaving no trace behind. This dramatic opening sequence is accompanied by the show's memorable theme music, composed by the talented Lalo Schifrin.
The series aired on CBS from 1966 to 1973 and was highly popular during its initial run. It was later revived for two seasons on ABC, from 1988 to 1990, with Peter Graves reprising his role as Jim Phelps. The show's enduring popularity has also led to a successful series of theatrical motion pictures, starting in 1996 and starring Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, a new member of the IMF. These movies have become some of the highest-grossing films in the action spy genre, further cementing the legacy of Mission: Impossible as a timeless classic.
