Memory & Desire tells the poignant story of Sayo and Keiji, a couple who choose to elope to New Zealand to marry in secret, seeking refuge from the disapproval of Keiji's traditional mother back in Japan. Their decision to marry abroad is a desperate bid to find freedom and happiness away from the judgment and constraints imposed by their families.

During their honeymoon in the serene landscapes of New Zealand, Sayo and Keiji revel in the chance to openly express their love and commitment without the shadow of cultural expectations and familial interference. This period is marked by hope and intimacy, a brief sanctuary where their bond can flourish unencumbered.

Tragically, their joy is shattered when Keiji drowns in a sudden accident. Following the customs of Keiji's culture, Sayo is compelled to return to Japan and live under the roof of her harsh and selfish mother-in-law. This return thrusts her into a challenging existence filled with grief and oppression, as she navigates life under the watchful eyes of a family that never accepted her love for Keiji.
