Late Night with David Letterman was a groundbreaking and influential comedy talk show that aired on NBC for 11 years, from 1982 to 1993. Hosted by the iconic and irreverent David Letterman, the show was the first incarnation of the Late Night franchise and set the tone for the many talk shows that would follow in its footsteps. The show was known for its unique blend of humor, interviews, and quirky sketches, which helped to establish Letterman as one of the most influential figures in late-night television.
The show's format was simple yet effective, with Letterman sitting behind a desk and delivering monologues filled with jokes and witty observations about current events. He would then welcome a variety of guests, including actors, musicians, and comedians, for interviews and performances. However, it was Letterman's unconventional approach to these segments that truly set the show apart. He would often poke fun at his guests, engage in playful banter, and even incorporate unexpected elements, such as throwing food or water, to keep things interesting.
Late Night with David Letterman also featured a number of recurring sketches and segments that became fan favorites. These included "Stupid Pet Tricks," where viewers would send in videos of their pets performing silly tricks, and "Viewer Mail," where Letterman would read and respond to letters from viewers. The show also featured a number of memorable moments, such as when Letterman famously wore a suit made of velcro and stuck himself to a wall, and when he had a guest appearance from a monkey named "Snowball" who was trained to ride a tiny bicycle. The show's legacy continues to be felt today, with many of its elements and sketches being replicated and adapted by other talk shows.
After David Letterman left NBC in 1993, the time slot was filled by Late Night with Conan O'Brien, which ran until 2009. Jimmy Fallon then took over as host of Late Night, and his tenure lasted until 2014 when he was promoted to host The Tonight Show. Seth Meyers then became the new host of Late Night, and the show continues to air to this day. Despite the changing of the guards, Late Night with David Letterman remains a beloved and influential show, and its impact on the world of late-night television can still be felt today.
