Karate Kid: Legends is peppy and warm-hearted enough to excuse its shortcomings. Especially if you’re already nostalgically invested in the 41-year-old series and just can’t resist a training montage or freeze-frame punch-the-air victory shot.

Karate Kid: Legends is like the IKEA instruction booklet for making a Karate Kid movie: a marvel of abbreviated, gestural storytelling that should be taught in schools as an example of what a perfectly structured script looks like. It’s screenwriting as train scheduling: everything arrives on time, more or less; nothing crashes; nobody is inconvenienced overly; and then you’re home. And unless someone threw up or showed you their dick in the theatre, you will never remember having taken this trip. Karate Kid: Legends is an example of how a film everyone worked hard on, probably in good faith, could end up in one of those giant bins at Walmart mere weeks from now, held up by an astonished-looking 50-year old wondering how in the world they made another one of these without him even knowing about it.

Jackie Chan as Mr. Han

Jackie Chan

Mr. Han
In "The Karate Kid" (2010), Jackie Chan delivers a nuanced performance as Mr. Han, a maintenance man with a hidden past, who becomes a mentor to Dre Parker (Jaden Smith). Chan brings a depth of wisdom and restraint to the role, distancing himself from his typically flamboyant and comedic on-screen personas. His portrayal of Mr. Han is steeped in quiet intensity, with a rich undercurrent of melancholy and regret. As a kung fu master, Chan's physical prowess is evident in the meticulously choreographed training sequences where he imparts the philosophy of martial arts to Dre, emphasizing balance, patience, and respect. His chemistry with Smith is genuine, and their evolving relationship from reluctant acquaintances to a surrogate father-son bond is the emotional core of the film. Chan's Mr. Han is not just a martial arts instructor; he is a teacher of life lessons, demonstrating that true strength comes from within and that the greatest battles are often fought within one's self. His performance resonates with a timeless message of perseverance, compassion, and self-discovery, making Mr. Han a memorable and iconic character in the "Karate Kid" legacy.

Joshua Jackson as Victor Lipani

Joshua Jackson

Victor Lipani
Joshua Jackson's portrayal of Victor in "Karate Kid: Legends" is a compelling embodiment of the archetypal antagonist, imbuing the character with a palpable intensity and a menacing charisma. As the leader of the Cobra Kai dojo, Jackson captures the essence of a martial artist driven by a relentless pursuit of dominance, embodying the "no mercy" philosophy that stands in stark contrast to the protagonist's journey. His performance is both physically and emotionally charged, showcasing a character who is not just a bully, but a complex individual shaped by his own set of convictions and experiences. Jackson's Victor is a formidable presence on screen, with every scene marked by his commanding demeanor and fierce rivalry, which serves as a catalyst for the narrative's central conflict and the growth of the story's hero. His ability to balance the intimidating physicality required for the role with the nuanced portrayal of Victor's internal struggles makes his performance a memorable highlight of the film.
Sadie Stanley as Mia Lipani

Sadie Stanley

Mia Lipani
Sadie Stanley delivered a vibrant and engaging performance as Mia Lipani in the short martial arts film "Karate Kid: Legends," which served as an advertisement for the video game "Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues." Although the project was a brief, action-packed homage to the beloved franchise, Stanley managed to infuse her character with a compelling blend of spunk and determination. As Mia, she showcased not only her physical prowess through intense karate sequences but also her ability to convey a strong-willed spirit reminiscent of the original film's underdog theme. Her portrayal of Mia as a quick-thinking and resilient character added depth to the narrative, capturing the essence of the Karate Kid universe while also bringing a fresh energy to the screen. Sadie Stanley's performance was a testament to her versatility as an actress, and it resonated well with fans, offering a tantalizing glimpse into her potential for more substantial roles within the action-adventure genre.
