Il pianeta Cybertron è abitato da una particolare generazione di robot trasformisti divisi in due fazioni: gli Autobots, guidati dal buono e saggio Optimus Prime, e i Decepticons, comandati dal malvagio Megatron . Ogni Transformer ha la capacità di tramutarsi in un diverso tipo di meccanismo - dai mezzi di trasporto alle armi - che lo contraddistingue dagli altri. A causa della carenza di carburante su Cybertron, entrambi i gruppi partono alla ricerca di un pianeta in cui reperire i materiali atti alla creazione dei cubi di Energon, la loro fonte di energia.
