Come tutti anche Ted è nato e cresciuto in una cittadina in cui tutto è di plastica, tutto è finto e non c'è vegetazione. In quel microambiente la vita scorre tranquilla e nessuno sente la mancanza del verde. Nessuno tranne la ragazza di cui Ted è perdutamente innamorato, lei farebbe di tutto per trovare un albero, lui farà di tutto per procurarglielo, andando a chiedere che fine abbiano fatto all'ultimo in grado di ricordare l'epoca in cui gli alberi erano presenti ovunque. A mettergli i bastoni fra le ruote è il magnate locale, lo spietato industriale che rifornisce la città di ossigeno in bottiglia e che non ha interesse ad un ritorno della fotosintesi clorofiliana.
