However, despite the brave efforts of the military, the alien forces prove to be an insurmountable adversary, and the offensive ultimately fails. Undeterred, human ingenuity prevails, and on July 4, a daring plan is devised to infiltrate the alien mothership and plant a nuclear missile within its core. This risky operation, spearheaded by Captain Steven Hiller and President Thomas J. Whitmore, represents humanity's last hope for survival in the face of an overwhelming extraterrestrial threat.
