Set in 1860s Paris, 'In Secret' follows Therese, a young woman confined in a loveless marriage to her ailing husband Camille, under the control of her domineering aunt Madame Raquin. Therese's mundane life revolves around working in a small shop and observing her aunt's evening domino games with a variety of guests. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when she begins a passionate and forbidden affair with Laurent, Camille's seductive friend, unleashing a chain of tragic events. The film is an adaptation of Emile Zola's novel 'Thérèse Raquin.' Interesting trivia: 1) Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Therese, spent significant time studying 19th-century French societal norms and body language to authentically portray the restrained character. 2) The film was shot on location in Paris, including many lesser-known historic districts, to capture the authentic atmosphere of the 1860s. 3) Director Charlie Stratton chose to use natural lighting extensively to evoke the somber and oppressive mood reflective of the novel's fatalistic themes.
