Idiocracy is a satirical sci-fi comedy that explores a future society where intelligence has drastically declined over centuries. The Pentagon, in an effort to test its clandestine Human Hibernation Project, selects the most average individuals from present-day America: an Army private named Cpl. "Average Joe" Bauers, portrayed by Luke Wilson, and a prostitute named Rita, played by Maya Rudolph. Through a series of unforeseen events, they are sent into deep hibernation and wake up in the year 2505.
Upon awakening, Joe and Rita find themselves in a world that has evolved into a startlingly dumbed-down civilization. The population is dominated by anti-intellectualism, consumerism, and absurd public policies, resulting in a society where basic skills and common sense have become rare commodities. To their amazement and frustration, Joe and Rita quickly realize that, despite being average individuals in their original time, they are now among the smartest people alive in this future landscape.
As they navigate this bizarre and chaotic world, Joe and Rita face numerous challenges trying to make sense of the new social order and attempt to help the dysfunctional society. "Idiocracy" uses sharp humor and sharp social commentary to critique the potential consequences of neglecting education, critical thinking, and responsible governance over time. The interplay between Luke Wilson's everyman persona and Maya Rudolph's resourceful character adds depth and comedic charm to the narrative.
