"Good Fortune" falls within the Drama genre, characterized by its focus on emotional and relational development, intense character-driven storytelling, and often complex moral dilemmas. Typical elements present in this show include a central conflict involving personal struggles—embodied by the struggling gig worker and the wealthy capitalist—and a supernatural twist through the angel Gabriel, bringing a unique perspective to human experiences. What makes "Good Fortune" stand out from other Drama titles is its blend of celestial intervention with real-world socioeconomic themes, offering both heartfelt moments and thought-provoking contrasts between different social classes. Additionally, the character of Gabriel, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, adds a mix of well-meaning innocence and ineptitude, providing both levity and depth that elevate the narrative beyond conventional dramas.

Though the quality of the cast is undeniable, the dialogue they’re given to work with is stilted and detached, never going deep enough for us to believe these characters have built true connections, or had real personal epiphanies. Everything is nicely shot, the Christmas Carol-esque visions Gabriel gives Arj of his life to come are poignantly done, and it does try to explore America’s vast wealth-inequality problems — though in a way that ultimately feels first-base and performative. But Good Fortune’s biggest sin of all? For a film billed as a comedy, there are no real laughs to be found.

Good Fortune (2025) is an attempt by Aziz Ansari to create a film that addresses the growing wealth gap, homelessness, and the gig economy in Los Angeles through a narrative inspired by classics like It's a Wonderful Life and Trading Places. Despite its strong cast including Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, and Keanu Reeves, the movie struggles with shallow commentary, underdeveloped stakes, and unconvincing character dynamics. Keanu Reeves stands out as the angel Gabriel, bringing a reassuring charm to the film's otherwise frustrating attempts at relevance and sentimentality. Ultimately, Good Fortune feels like a missed opportunity that lacks the depth and authenticity needed to tackle its important themes effectively.
