In 'F/X2', Bryan Brown reprises his role as Roland 'Rollie' Tyler, an expert special effects artist who has since transitioned into the world of toymaking. Despite his career shift, Rollie finds himself drawn back into the realm of crime when his girlfriend Kim's ex-husband, Mike, a dedicated police officer, enlists his help to apprehend a dangerous killer. With Rollie's inventive skills, the operation initially moves forward smoothly, but the situation takes a tragic turn when an unknown assailant murders both the target and Mike.

The aftermath triggers suspicion and intrigue as Mike's superior, Silak, insists that it was the killer who eliminated Mike. However, Rollie is convinced that the truth is far more sinister, suspecting Silak's involvement in the police officer's death. Determined to uncover the truth and bring justice, Rollie reaches out to Leo McCarthy, played by Brian Dennehy, the seasoned detective from the previous installment who has now become a private investigator.
