Nachdem der talentierte Maler Mark Hogancamp von fünf Hooligans verprügelt wurde, liegt er tagelang im Koma. Als er wiedererwacht, muss er nicht nur das Essen, Gehen oder Schreiben wieder lernen, darüber hinaus hat er auch keinerlei Erinnerung mehr an sein Leben vor dem folgenschweren Zwischenfall. Es ist nichts mehr so, wie es einmal war. Um mit seinem Trauma umzugehen, entwickelt er schließlich eine ganz eigene Form der Therapie: Er baut in seinem Garten ein Modell eines belgischen Dorfes aus der Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs nach, in dessen Welt er sich von nun an regelmäßig flüchtet. Darüber hinaus entwirft er auch zahlreiche Figuren, Puppen, die auf vertrauten Menschen aus Marks Leben basieren und das Dorf bewohnen.
