Die Serie erzählt die Geschichte der vier Freundinnen Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings und Emily Fields, welche in Rosewood, einem Vorort von Philadelphia leben und deren Leben sich nach dem spurlosen Verschwinden ihrer Freundin Alison DiLaurentis vollkommen und drastisch verändert. Die Geschichte beginnt mit der Rückkehr Aria Montgomerys, welche zusammen mit ihrer Familie ein Jahr in Island gelebt hat und nun zurück nach Rosewood kommt. Zur selben Zeit erhalten Aria und ihre Freundinnen plötzlich mysteriöse Nachrichten und Drohungen von einer unbekannten Person namens „A“. Die Handlung der Serie besteht in den Anstrengungen der vier Freundinnen hinter die Identität von „A“ zu kommen und dabei das Verschwinden ihrer Freundin Alison aufzuklären.
