Ben Randall ist einer der erfahrensten Rettungsschwimmer der US-amerikanischen Küstenwache und hat bereits mehrere hundert Menschen gerettet. Doch bei einem schweren Unfall auf hoher See muss er hilflos mit ansehen, wie alle seine Kameraden ums Leben kommen. Kurz darauf wird Ben an die Militärakademie versetzt, um junge Rettungsschwimmer auszubilden.
