Warschau, 1939. Die Besetzung Polens durch die Deutschen bedeutet für den gefeierten polnisch-jüdischen Pianisten Wladyslaw Szpilman den Beginn eines langen Leidenswegs. Durch einen Glücksfall entgeht er dem Transport ins KZ, in dem seine gesamte Familie ums Leben kommt. Von nun an fristet er ein Dasein im Untergrund. Hungrig, krank und psychisch vor dem Kollaps stehend, wird er gegen Kriegsende schließlich von einem deutschen Offizier aufgespürt. Doch anstatt ihn auszuliefern, bittet er ihn, Klavier zu spielen.
