Kossakovsky’s cinematography captures the immense scale and intransigent beauty of mountain ranges, quarries, forests, and ruins, as well as areas of devastation and sites of renewal. From Italy’s Valley of the Temples and the modernist structures of Nuova Gibellina to the so-called “Eye of the Sahara” and beyond, the film surveys the vast expanse of our planet and the ephemeral, yet impressive, attempts by humanity to assert dominion over it. Hardly any words are spoken, save for architect Michele de Lucchi’s occasional ruminations, because the awe-inspiring visuals say it all.
