Bigelow wisely decides not to indulge in any spectacle of violence and destruction, knowing full well that her audience’s anticipation of the inevitable is far more frightening than what she might be able to present visually. A House Of Dynamite might not tell us anything particularly new (surely we all know that nuclear weapons are terrifying), but it’s delivered so deftly, it’s difficult to care. If only all cautionary tales could be this brilliantly entertaining.

Kathryn Bigelow's A House of Dynamite is a humourless and rote slog presented from three perspectives of incompetent leadership during a crisis where a mysterious nuclear missile makes its way to Chicago. Despite a strong female protagonist in NORAD officer Olivia Walker, the film suffers from musty script choices and a lack of subtlety, leaving it devoid of gravity and failing to capture the stakes of global annihilation, ultimately presenting a bleak commentary on human nature and our ill-equipped response to technological disasters.
